About the Author

Bruce R. Barringer holds the Johnny D. Pope Entrepreneurship Chair in the Department of Entrepreneurship at Oklahoma State University. He earned his PhD from the University of Missouri and his MBA from Iowa State University. His research interests include feasibility analysis, firm growth, corporate entrepreneurship, and the impact of interorganizational relationships on business organizations. Over the years, he has worked with a number of technology-based incubators and student-led entrepreneurship activities and clubs. He serves on the editorial review board of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and Journal of Small Business Management. His work has been published in Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, and Quality Management Journal. Bruce’s outside interests include running, trail biking, and swimming. Ireland R. Duane is a University Distinguished Professor and holds the Conn Chair in New Ventures Leadership in the Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. Previously, he served on the faculties at University of Richmond, Baylor University, and Oklahoma State University. His research interests include strategic entrepreneurship, corporate entrepreneurship, strategic alliances, and effectively managing organizational resources. Duane’s research has been published in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Executive, Strategic Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal among others. He is a co-author of both scholarly books and textbooks, including best-selling strategic management texts. Along with Dr. Mike Morris (Syracuse University), Duane serves as a co-editor for the Prentice Hall Entrepreneurship Series. These books offer in-depth treatments of specific entrepreneurship topics, such as Business Plans for Entrepreneurs (authored by Bruce Barringer). Duane has served or is serving on the editorial review boards for a number of journals, including AMJ, AMR, AME, JOM, JBV, and ETP. He just completed a term as Editor for AMJ. He has completed terms as an associate editor for AME and as a consulting editor for ETP and has served as a guest co-editor for special issues of a number of journals including AMR, AME, and SMJ. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society. He is the current Vice President and Program Chair for the Academy of Management. This ebook is expensive as heck, but can only be downloaded on two devices? That's a terrible policy and makes the ebook less useful than a hard copy. Kindle talks a strong game about allowing multiple devices, but the restriction on this title makes the hard copy more useful. Save your money and time.

This textbook offers insightful information about the entrepreneurial process. While the editing could use some work, the content is relatively current and easy to digest. However, be warned: the Kindle eBook version only allows use on 2 simultaneous devices. Apparently, this is set by the publisher (Prentice Hall). If you are like most modern students with a laptop, tablet, phone, etc., it may be difficult to get the content where you need it when you need it.

We used this book in our Entrprenueurship class. Unlike many text books this one does not put you to sleep. We haven't covered the entire book yet but so far the text book covers a little bit of everything - it explains it in easy to understand verbage and the case studies reinforce the point. Very good text book. Only fault I find as I do with many textbooks is the price. However, I am sure I will keep it and refer to it for many years to come.

Typos, unoriginal content. Why "distinguished" professors continually choose texts like this is beyond me.

Easy to read. Colorful. Simple text style and setup. Lots of real life examples. The cases at the end of the chapters are useful for assessing what you just read.However, the book could use some more in-depth breakdown of a Feasibility Analysis and a Business Plan.

A very boring book but has good information. I wish that the author could have been more entertaining with some of the subject matter to make it easier to read.

Lot of common sense material in the book, but all around an OK resource.

This is a good book but not like spected, people change for good or bad on a relationship, and this book basically tells you forget about the other person, dosen't tell you about second chances, it will be very disappointed for the person it got hurt from is partner to read this book if there still love in their relationship and things can work out, there is always a second chance.

Sylvester is definitely my kinda writer, poet, author, soul, being. I learn so many aspects about myself and realize that I am really not the only one feeling, thinking, or saying these things. This is my second read by him and I plan to continue to purchase and read everything he puts out.

The combined biographies of a male physician in Boston and a female aristocrat in London result in an exciting race against death by smallpox. Carrell's substantial work (500+ pages) of fictionalized history, obviously well-researched, is readable and informative. Many of the names we know from the American Colonial period turn up in the narrative of medical daring and desperation. That alone is worth the price of the download, a bit more than you would pay for sheer fiction these days.The humble Zabdiel Boylston contrasts nicely with the audacious Lady Mary Wortle, member of royal society at a time when the king was stubborn and the influence of Sir Hans Sloane, whose collections inspired the founding of the British Museum, was at its zenith. Both hero and heroine are persecuted for believing in innoculation, a risky means of addressing the horrible "plague" of the 18th century. The fact that they each learned about the technique of inserting matter from diseased patients' sores under the skin of as yet unaffected citizens is particularly interesting because Boylston learned about it from his African slaves, and Lady Mary learned from her observations in exotic Turkey, the culture of which she embraced. Ostracized by the medical "experts" and demonized by frightened contemporaries, they prevailed in promoting a folk remedy as the most efficient means of protecting the population. In London, it took experimenting with prisoners before the aristocracy were won over. In Boston, the motivation was mainly to survive.Carrell has Boylston meeting Lady Mary in London, a fact not substantiated, but interesting to give the account an aura of romance. On a Kindle, it is a long read. The notes take up the last 20% of the space. This was a fascinating read. At first I thought "how am I going to get through this old English style language?" But very quickly I adapted to it. After all it IS English! The history of the inoculation for Smallpox is extremely interesting. It's hard to believe people were so resistant to something that could spare them misery and death, but that's the way it was, and I guess it might be that way today with another kind of disease. The writing is at times hard to understand. The author uses colons so frequently that I got lost among them. But nevertheless she tells a good story and gives one plenty of food for thought.I recommend it to lovers of historical fiction, although little of it was actually fiction. I would have given it five stars except for the writer's tendency to go on a bit much. Very good just the same!

This is a fictionalized account of smallpox in England and in Boston in the early 18th century. While many people are familiar with the story of Jenner and vaccination against smallpox using the cowpox virus, fewer people are aware of the process of variolation, which used small amount of smallpox to give the recipients a milder case which protected them from the disease. This was practiced in Africa, Turkey and the far east and was "rediscovered" and brought into practice by two brave people, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, a survivor of this terrible disease. and Zabdiel Boylston, a doctor in Boston. Each took much risk to spearhead the use of this practice, and in some ways, suffered for their beliefs. The author has done an enormous amount of research into smallpox and the history of variolation and does a nice job of building a full story about each side rather than just a recitation of the facts.

I found this book to be informative and engaging from the beginning. I had to keep asking myself if it was fiction or not, and in many instances the writing just pulled me into the scenery. I enjoyed the archaic letters and the use of documentation to add verisimilitude to the story. Whether all the events occurred as written here is immaterial to enjoying the text, because we'll never know and what remains is that they could have happened more or less along the lines of Dr. Carrell's story.Some scenes were particularly riveting - especially after Boylston is ordered to cease the innoculations and his family is endangered. Equally catching is the tense and tight prose that follows Lady Mary on her secret missions to fight smallpox.This book seems to cross the boundaries between fiction and creative non-fiction, but to me it was very satisfying and difficult to put down.

Fascinating and engaging read for a nonfictional book about a horrible disease. Jennifer Lee Carrell brought to life the personas and events involved in the eradication of small pox as a common infliction.

Period accurate and well researched. This was a wonderful read for those of us whom have an understanding of immunization history. Really well done.

Great story that is well told(I'm sure with some literary license).As an MD myself ,it was wonderful to see the medical world as it really existed in the early 1700's and how they struggled with this killer disease from a very personal level.Lots of personal/medical and political intrigue.

Although this was not an easy read I found it fascinating and thoroughly enjoyed learning about how inoculation fort smallpox came into practice.

About the Author
Patrick H. O’Neil is Professor of Politics and Government at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Indiana University. Professor O’Neil’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of authoritarianism and democratization. His past research focused on Eastern Europe, and his current research deals with the Middle East, particularly Iran. His publications include Revolution from Within: The Hungarian Socialist Worker’s Party “Reform Circles” and the Collapse of Communism and Communicating Democracy: The Media and Political Transitions (editor).

Ronald Rogowski is Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and served from 2007 to 2012 as Editor-in-Chief of the American Political Science Review. He is the author of Rational Legitimacy and Commerce and Coalitions and co-author of Electoral Systems and the Balance of Consumer-Producer Power. He was elected in 1994 as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2007–2008 was a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.
