Reading the Starborne was like having my life validated...For so many years I felt so alone as if there was nobody else who could understand the seemingly strange occurances in my life. Always dismissed as having an over active imagination, I felt isolated and completely misunderstood. But reading Solara's words brought tears to my eyes in the realization that I in fact am NOT alone and that there are many who experience the same things. If you feel you come from another dimension, youll find great comfort in this book. Its truly Spirit on paper.

I was reading this book one night, with an open mind but no real belief. I got the part where Solara explains the steps to go through to get your Angelic Name. Right. So I start going through the steps in my head, up to the point where she says you then hear and feel your name. My body shook and tingled, I heard a voice saying my Angelic Name! I s*** you not!So....I'm sitting there, still shaking ten minutes later when my wife walks though the door and stops dead, staring at me. She says "Why is there a sparkle all around you."Ok.Solara comes to Australia a few months later and I take a clairvoyant friend to see her free introductory talk. Doesn't everyone have a clairvoyant friend?I ask my friend what does she think. She says to me"Her aura is gold and goes from there ", (she points to one side of the wide hall) " to there" (she points to the other side).So I went to the weekend seminar and had my whole reality changed.If you are drawn to read this book, it's the real deal. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Frank R. Giordano began his teaching career at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, where he served for 21 years, including seven years as professor and head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He currently is a Professor of Defense Analysis and Operations Research at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. He has served as project director for several major National Science Foundation grants devoted to modeling, including one to initiate a high school modeling contest (the HiMCM). For the past 15 years, he has served as the director of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Frank R. Giordano began his teaching career at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, where he served for 21 years, including seven years as professor and head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He currently is a Professor of Defense Analysis and Operations Research at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. He has served as project director for several major National Science Foundation grants devoted to modeling, including one to initiate a high school modeling contest (the HiMCM). For the past 15 years, he has served as the director of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling.

Maurice D. Weir is professor emeritus at the Naval Postgraduate School. He began his teaching career at Whitman College, and then in 1969 became a professor of mathematics at the Naval Postgraduate School, where he also served as associate provost for instruction. Dr. Weir's research and teaching interests include combat systems modeling and simulation, mathematics education, mathematical modeling, and differential equations. Professor Weir won the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the United States Military Academy in 1986 and the Schieffelin Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Naval Postgraduate School in 1983. Professor Weir retired from teaching in 1999 but is still actively engaged in writing mathematics textbooks. He received his M.S. and D.A. degrees from Carnegie-Mellon.

William P. Fox is a professor in the Department of Defense Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Previously; he was an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor of operations research while serving in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United States Military Academy (USMA) for more than 12 years. He also served as the Chair of Mathematics at Francis Marion University for eight years before coming to the Naval Postgraduate School. Dr. Fox has taught a variety of mathematics courses in his career, and his areas of interest include mathematical modeling, optimization, statistics, and simulations. He holds his undergraduate degree from USMA, a master's degree from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Ph.D. from Clemson University.

I usually try to restrain myself from writing book reviews for Amazon, but I feel I definitely need to write a review of this wonderful book. This is one of the few books for which I say to myself, as I finish reading it, "I must definitely re-read this soon." The book is held together both by its subject (great Russian literature) and its author (the intellectual and social journey of a starry-eyed student of Russian language and culture), and both of these themes carry the reader forward. In addition, each chapter of this book is a thoughtful and entertaining essay in itself.

Viv Groskop is a brilliant writer who made a topic I wouldn't typically be interested in one of my favorites!

Viv Groskop loves Russian literature and that becomes contagious. The Anna Karenina Fix is a perfect balance of memoir, discussion of literature and author biographies. I enjoyed each of these components and appreciated the organization of chapters in which one author and one famous work is the focus, however, as Groskop demonstrates, literature always overlaps. I especially enjoyed as she shared the moments in her own life when she encountered these classics. Whether reading for the first time or returning to read, each work of literature had impacted her life at the time and isn’t that the point of reading? Oftentimes, her thoughts had me laughing out loud. Mostly though, I found that I wanted to read more Russian literature. Who knew that all those “long depressing books” could have such an impact today? I simply loved the humor of The Anna Karenina Fix and recommend it to those who love books or want to love books. Well done! I won a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are mine.

Even as a broad introduction to some of the greats of Russian literature I think this is a terrific introduction and provides some background to the novels, the authors and even some smattering of history. It's all great stuff and could even serve as pre-reading before some of the novels are tackled as part of a course.The author seems to have enjoyed putting the content together and the material never seems heavy our dour: despite the source material on occasion being exactly that. There's plenty of humour, personal anecdotes and epiphanies that often support and complement the novels and the themes being discussed. Really enjoyed my time reading this. Thanks!

As Groskop says, the protagonists have suffered so that you don’t have to.‘Russian classics are, admittedly, not the most obvious place to look for tips for a happier life,’ the author adds. An example of this is the first line of Anne Karenina: ‘All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way’ – and the novel is about unhappy families.Groskop has 11 self-help themes and an associated Russian novel with each thematic answer. For Groskop’s first theme on how to know who you really are, she chooses Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina (1878). She says Tolstoy ‘depicts people who are a mess because that’s normal, honest and real’ and, in doing so, he tells us what not to do to lead an authentic life. Groskop interprets his meaning in her analysis of Tolstoy’s book, which she does for each theme and in each different Russian classic.She says to read Ivan Turgenev’s A Month in the Country to survive a bout of unrequited love; Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962) to learn how to keep going when things go wrong; and Nikolai Gogol’s Dead Souls (1842) in order to avoid hypocrisy. In Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters (1900), Irina, Masha, and Olga want nothing more than to go to Moscow. The novel is about the feeling that the grass is always greener where the sisters are not; no matter where they are, happiness is always somewhere on the horizon. Or as Ivan Denisovich would say in Solzhenitsyn’s novel: ‘we always think the other person is holding a bigger radish.’I studied Russian literature at university (in the English language), and have a great love for all forms of Russian literature by all authors, so I love the way Groskop exposes her passion and the lessons she has learned from the classics.Concluding with Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace (1869), Groskop says that it echoed the plotline of her own life: ‘lots of bits that I didn’t want to look at or know about; lots of bits I didn’t understand until I had children of my own; lots of bits that only made sense once I had realized that life does not have to be exciting and dynamic in order to be interesting.’Amid all of the literature analysis and self-help advice are anecdotes of her time in Moscow learning Russian. The real life examples of the themes in Russian literature are witty, comical, and beautifully told. Russian literary heroes and heroines are depicted in friends, teachers, and lovers. This book is a wonderful interplay of fiction and reality. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and now I want to re-read Russian literature all over again.Postscript: Viv Groskop does not include all Russian novels, for as she states, she omits Nikolai Gogol’s The Overcoat, even though ‘it sums up Russian literature in a nutshell.’
