Review
"It is easy to notice the author’s extensive and hands-on knowledge in the domain. ... Such experience emanates from the book pages. ... The book is a must for anyone engaged in developing, verifying, or certifying airborne systems. ... [It] offers very clear but relatively concise explanation of the process of developing software-intensive aviation systems under guidance of RTCA DO-178C and related documents. The book does an outstanding job of providing necessary basics with very practical ‘dos and don’ts’. ... can be used as a base reference for software aspects of airborne systems development process."―Andrew J. Kornecki, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University "This book provides practical guidance for cost-effective safe software. Ms. Rierson distilled the key elements from her experiences and multiple projects into a concise, easy-to-understand book. ... This book demonstrates how, when done properly, safe software development can avoid the inefficiencies and bureaucracy sometimes associated with certification and DO-178. ... What differentiates this book is its honest, real-world recommendations and the insights into the significance of the various DO-178C objectives. If projects took her guidance seriously and implemented it from the start, I believe the projects would cost a fraction of ‘check-box’ projects and result in safer software."―Wendy Ljungren, GE Aviation "The book is well researched, and is based on the experiences of a knowledgeable regulator and a practitioner. Leanna’s style is easy to read. It explains the terse but precise guidance given in regulations using terms that are easy to understand. ... The topic is made very approachable through a combination of three styles. It uses a narrative form so the book reads like a story, with the development of arguments and reasoning of an essay, and the certification experiences of the author like an autobiography. The result is an engaging book that is hard to put down." ―George Romanski, Verocel, Inc.

This is a much easier read than the raw specs, and provides insights into how a real DER uses DO-178C during a certification project. The text is very friendly and easy to read with excellent advice.I'd recommend this to anyone working on critical software of any kind, especially if you are preparing for certification. It's not just for aeronautical software, it has much distilled wisdom for anyone writing software that simply must work. From soup to nuts, Rierson walks you through a rigorous Software Development Lifecycle, including Requirements (system- and component-level), Design, Coding, SCM, SQA, how to be conservative with OO programming, and little used techniques such as formal methods. Some advice: if your idiot boss tells you the book isn't necessary and to just read the standards, get a new job. More advice: don't loan it out to anyone, or you may not get it back.
I'm fairly new to DO-178 in general, but this book took me from a novice to an intermediate knowledge level. Leanna, as I found out, is a very well respected and well known authority in the avionics safety world. FAA site still has many of the paper and her thesis on their site. I'm very happy to have learned from her book. One really negative thing I must say is more toward the publisher than to the contents or author. The book print quality is absolutely horrible! I used stickies to mark my pages, and when I took the stickies off, the text for the most part has also pealed away with the stickies! Talk about one time use books. CRC, please do better print quality, I used to respect your books.
This book provides a lot of details and recommendations for implementing this important standard for aviation software. A lot of her comments reflect common sense approaches to a very complex topic. Her call for more training for the engineers involved in implementing DO-178 in their design activities would be well to be heeded by the industry.
In the world of aviation software, a knowledge of DO-178C is becoming more critical. I found myself purchasing this book because of a project that I am on where I am part of a team developing requirements for an avionics system that will eventually go to the RTCA for standards (MOPS) development. While I'm not taking part in the design of the system at the implementation level, I still wanted to become knowledgeable about the platforms and systems on which this avionics system will eventually run (even though requirements are supposed to be "implementation free", they still need to have be implementable).I thought that the first half of the book contained a useful refresher, though much of it is common to systems engineering and software engineering in general. For me, the real strength of the book was in Parts IV and V where the author goes through the more Aviation-specific topics. I found these later sections very enlightening. In particular, I found chapter 20 to be very up-to-date and accurate - the author's material seemed to conform very closely to what I see on the websites of Avionics RTOS vendors.Overall, I would recommend this to anyone working in the realm of aviation software or avionics systems.
The depth of practical knowledge and the conversational style of the writing makes you feel like the author is speaking right to you. Clear, practical, direct, and totally understandable. I bought 2 more copies for my workers.
If you have to select only one book on DO-178c / 278a this would be my pick. This book explains how to develop software in order to pass avionics certification. This book goes beyond the RTCA documents. I work as V&V manager, and am using this book to help me teach new employees, think that Leanna has great way to present complex things in a simple and understandable way.
Leanna Rierson's book is an excellent single source reference for guidance on RTCA/DO-178B, RTCA/DO-178C and its supplements RTCA/DO-330 through - 333. It includes anecdotes from years of practice in aviation certification with the FAA and as a consulting DER. This book should be required reading by every software developer who is involved in aviation software development and certification. Then it should be kept nearby as a ready reference.
Ms. Rierson does a great job of explaining the keys to airborne software certification and the associated hardware. From planning to execution the finer points are laid out. The processes she describes can be applied to any safety critical project including the medical and security industries. The book itself is fixed in text size which could be a problem for older readers, but the ability to make it highly portable and the ease of highlighting and notating such a complicated subject more than outweighs the lack of text scaling.
